The main character's feelings have less to do with overt sexuality and more to do with coming of age curiosity. Which the film firmly establishes. Multiple times. In the beginning, middle and especially the end. It's not subtext. It's literal spoken text. By the main character. They are confused about these feelings and must wait until they mature to fully address them. To position that conclusion as something sexually sinister is just dishonest.

I think hyper-focusing on the film's flirtatious elements as sexual perversion (or especially as sexual realism) says a lot more about the person watching the film than it does the source material. The review I read tried to insinuate that this was some kind of gender-swapped Lolita when in reality it was more like Contact.
