Most people date quite a bit before they find “the one.” Even if all your dates are just dinner and a movie, dating can get expensive. Some men and women split the bill, but if the man or woman is traditional about who pays, dating can become very pricey for the guy. There are quite a few ways to have an inexpensive date that doesn’t feel cheap.
Do you have a great sense of humor? A capacity for being a good listener? Are you an active volunteer? An experienced handyman? A great cook? Someone with a wide circle of wonderful friends?
If you’re not sure what qualities to look for, ask your friends what they love most about their partners to get some ideas.
Dating over 50 often starts while enjoying activities in the company of like-minded people. Regardless of what has brought you to the point of dating at 50, this is a time to engage with life and just be yourself. Be open to different activities and interests ... and the people who pursue them.
Speaking of uncomfortable territory, if you’re in your 50s, you’ve likely had your fair share of relationship ups and downs over the years. While it can be tempting to talk about past relationships (especially if your date takes the conversation there first), resist the urge, especially on the first date. Talking at any length about your ex (or worse—how your ex-husband cheated, or your last relationship ended because your boyfriend couldn’t get his life together) is likely to be a downright turn-off.
That comes with wearing clothing that highlights the parts of your body you love. If you have great legs, go with a skirt and heels. If your lips are your thing, bright lipstick is the way to go. If you are proud of your biceps, go sleeveless. Whatever outfit is going to make you feel beautiful and convey the most self-confidence you have, that’s the outfit.
I like to think of online dating as a virtual cocktail party. When you’re at a cocktail party, you don’t tell a man, “I love gardening. I love pink flowers.” Your profile needs to be like a little story. I teach women how to do this, too. Make it into a story that intrigues a man to want to get to know you.
You can always become an even better version of the great man that you are today, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that you will find the solution in a bottle of hair dye or the latest car.
Despite all the baggage and the tainted outlook some people over 50 have, I think people dating after divorce over 50 are so much more authentic, interesting, real, funny, wise, and entertaining!!
