The small village of Tasiilaq is situated in Greenland in the Arctic Circle and is home to 2.093 people. This area has the second lowest population density on earth. Only the Antarctic region has fewer inhabitants. Tasiilaq lies on the south-east coast of Greenland in the Irminger Sea on the west side of Kong Oscars Havn, an eight kilometre-long fjord in the south of Ammassalik Island. The island belongs to Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq and is one of the ten largest side islands of Greenland and the Arctic. The literal translation of “Tasiilaq” means “like a peaceful lake” to express the fact that the village is situated at the particularly calm Kong Oscar Havn Fjord.

Whereas Summit Camp is a year-round research station on the apex of the Greenland Ice Sheet, Sermilik Research Station, situated at the basin of Mittivakkat glacier (Mitdluagkat) in the west of Ammasalik Island, is only open in summer and houses up to ten researchers.
